Art Spotlight On Lufkin Parents: Luma Kennedy
"Hi, I'm Luma Kennedy, Musa's mama. I am a landscape architect and a scientist (plants and insects). I grew up in Amman, Jordan where science was considered more important than art! As an adult in the US, I was scared to try art (except for photography, with film and cool chemistry in the dark room). Eventually, my love for experimentation gave me some courage to try! As a longtime knitter, I started with the crafts -- taking more classes at the Pullen Arts Center: pottery, jewelry smithing, encaustic painting and more! I learned to draw when I turned 43 (never too late eh?). I recently got a degree in Landscape Architecture because it combines my passions for art and science, but also for people, culture and the environment.

Highly anticipated Holiday wreath workshop with guest artist shelby everhart is a hit with members
Visiting Artist Shelby Everhart Offered All Fall Art Club Members a Fun Wreath-Making Workshop
All Fall LRMS Art Club Members were invited to attend our December 2 meeting from 3-4:30pm in the art room to participate in the Mini-Wreath Workshop led by a visiting artist -- just in time for the holiday season!
Mrs. Barlow says, "I was delighted to bring you Ms. Shelby Everhart for an exciting craft session as part of this year's LRMS Art Club Visiting Artist Series. This December 2 workshop followed Artist Darren Segool's inspirational presentation last month all about discovering artistic gifts and creating art for real clients."
Ms. Everhart, who has been both Communications and Family Programs Director with the YMCA for over a decade, is not only creating abstract paintings and enjoying crafting in general, but she also has a degree in advertising and graphic design. Looking forward to presenting at Lufkin, Ms. Everhart says, "When I was [in middle school], I was an emo kid in drama club and didn’t have too many friends and was figuring out life like the rest of everyone. My hope for [students] their age is that they explore what they like, learn how to own it, and love themselves with confidence. I think art is a great outlet for this – I’m glad they have Mrs. Barlow and this club!" [For more photos from the event, see Art Club page.]

Peace Poster Contest with Cary Lions Club!
Congratulations to Lufkin artist Olivia Thompson, whose poster is moving on to compete at the next level in the 2021 Peace Poster Contest. Shout-out to Lily Smith (7-4) and her sister Maddie Smith (6-4) for submitting an entry this year as well. Lily's poster represented Lufkin in the contest last year; this is her third year as a participant in the Lions Club event at Lufkin.
"We are so fortunate to be one of the schools that Cary Lions Club sponsors so that our students have this opportunity to compete in the International Lions Club Peace Poster Contest. Each year, Lions Ed and Becky Burt kindly host a special breakfast reception at our school to celebrate our art students who present a poster entry, award the winning poster artist a $50 check, and deliver the winning poster to be judged at the next stage.
These three artists are just super representatives of our school, and the breakfast is one of those special events when we celebrate bringing these art students, their parents and school family, and our community partners together." -- Beth Barlow, LRMS Art Teacher and Art Club Advisor

2021 VOTING IS A WRAP! "MOST DIFFICULT TO CHOOSE SINCE ALL ARE AMAZING," SAYS STAFF MEMBER
Congratulations to Norah Sipes with "Pumpkin Cottage," Tyler Sorboro with "Dinner," and Emma Robke with "Fancy Horse" for securing the top 3 spots of the staff vote this Halloween Week! Lufkin staff members admitted that selecting their favorite picks this year was "extremely difficult" since so many deserved to win -- out of a record 24 entries. Thank you to all members who not only participated this year, but who really went above and beyond to share their artistic gifts. I am so proud of our art club members!
A big shout-out goes to several Lufkin parents for helping out at the pumpkin-carving event itself, donating extra pumpkins, providing snacks and contributing contest gift card awards. On behalf of our school, the visual arts program, and our students, thank you parents for making the 20201 contest the best one yet!

Excited About Resident Artist To Arrive in December!
Visiting Artist Virginia Maier
As the art teacher, you know I am thrilled to announce that PTA Cultural Arts Chair Shanon Douglas has coordinated with our local United Arts Council friends an artist-in-residence visit for all of my art elective students from December 13-17.
Artist Virginia Maier is an artist and art teacher living in NC since 2011. She produces and exhibits her own artwork in local galleries and participates in community art projects; she was awarded the NC Arts and Humanities Award in 2017. I am so glad to partner with Ms. Maier as she assists Lufkin students in painting their own barn quilts, filling my classes in on the history of this Pennsylvania Dutch practice and how barn quilt trails in our state originated.
Lufkin parent volunteers: Ms. Maier and I would love to have you join and assist us during this week-long workshop! Thank you for considering, and feel free to contact me.

As I write this, all staff is excited to welcome our students back to Lufkin this Fall! I want to introduce you to my new virtual classroom, pictured above, which looks incredibly similar to the real thing. YES, I repainted all the walls this summer with the help of a couple of invaluable Lufkin faculty members -- Mr. Land and Mrs. Rodriguez. I am so grateful for their assistance! To all my former students, I know it's hard to believe, but I cleaned everything out -- even the art supply room! I knooooow!! To enjoy all the exploratory adventures in the graphic, you must go to the interactive link in the caption. Clicking on images will take you to new places! Please take time to become familiar with these options since you and your parents may need to reference them throughout the year. I will leave useful links in place but will change out images so you can check out new places from time-to-time.

Congratulations LRMS Art Club Member Lily Smith! Her Peace Poster entry, representing Lufkin Road Middle School, moves on to the International Lions Club district competition. Lion Becky Bert presents Lily with her award and certificates, above.
Lily explains, "I titled my drawing An Unsung Hero because there was once a dog that saved a small town full of children with a vaccine in remote Alaska. This dog is named Togo. But another dog, named Balto was given all the credit because he made the final stretch of the trip. But the real hero was Togo. He led most of the journey except for the final stretch. He saved all of the children with no credit. This act of bravery is not known today by most people, but by the people who dig deep. The service this dog did was delivering a vaccine to helpless and dying children.
This relates to today during COVID19. They needed a vaccine like people in the world do today. This dog is what inspired me to do this drawing, using only pencil and colored pencil, I tried to create a picture of what the dogs went through while bringing peace into the setting as well. Originally, there were ten dogs, but I wanted the dogs in my drawing to stand out. So I did only three. The man on the sled resembles the owner of Togo. And the crate on the sled is the box of vaccines for the children. I worked hard on this piece and I hope it inspires others to dig a little deeper to see the true unsung heroes in our world today. A world that needs peace. Including peace through healing and services."

Rising 8th-Grader Dae'shaun Stefanelli is honored as he presented at United Arts First Friday Program
Each year United Arts (UAC) strives to find unique ways to highlight the powerful work accomplished through Artists-In-Schools Residencies. For several years now they have hosted an end-of-the-year Writers Share event where each of the writers selects one student from a program they presented earlier in the year to be honored.
This past February, Lufkin art elective students were fortunate to work with a Writer-In-Residence that was sponsored by our own PTSA and United Arts Council. Writer Mimi Herman, from the Artist-In-Schools Program, selected Dae’shaun Stefanelli out of all her visiting school student writing workshops this year to showcase his talent. Dae'shaun produced a writing in my art room that not only caught her eye, but convinced her to ask him about participating in a summer event with the United Arts Council that recognizes young and aspiring writers. Thus, Mimi, Julia from UAC, and I were delighted to place him "on-stage" to present his piece among an academic group of peers, instructors and education advocates who believe in him. I am excited that Dae'shaun was given this opportunity to share his work at this prestigious event.
With the state of things being as they are in June, the Arts Council team decided to host the event as a virtual one. Here is an excerpt of Dae'shaun's part in the program:

Tarheel Dog Show Student Art Contest Cancelled
Congrats Finalists Skylar Preston and Sarah George
Congratulations LRMS Art Club Members Skylar Preston and Sarah George for receiving special recognition at the American Kennel Club-sponsored art show at the NC State Fairgrounds, postponed until September. Both art students are finalists in the Tarheel Dog Show "Puppies in Spring" Art Contest (artwork below).
Gifts of Gold 2020
Congratulations Bailey Stevenson (8-1) for receiving special recognition on March 3 at the WCPSS Gifts of Gold Awards Ceremony at the Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh.
Writer-In-Residence Mimi Herman instructs Art Electives
A collaboration was made possible by a grant from the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, as well as our LRMS PTA: Ms. Barlow and visiting Resident Writer Mimi Herman joined forces at Lufkin Road Middle School to present a 5-day arts-integrated literacy workshop to 6th- and 7th-grade art elective students.
"I am so grateful for the support of Shanon Douglas, Lufkin's Cultural Arts Chair, and her department, our PTA representatives, our friends at the United Arts Council and our LRMS admin team for the opportunity to host professional artists and writers each year at our Lufkin campus." Ms. Barlow goes on to explain that "these creative, hands-on sessions offer our art students very focused, intimate cross-curriculum learning experiences."
"Not only does a guest instructor bring to the table a different skill set for students to benefit from, but I gain much insight from a colleague's perspective. The dynamics of an art and a writing instructor together seem to make learning in a collaborative student setting more spontaneous and exciting. It fosters a lot of positive energy!"
In fact, Mimi Herman unexpectedly approached a Lufkin art student to serve as speaker at the prestigious "Artist in Schools" United Arts Council Reading Event in June in Raleigh. She recognized his potential as a talented young writer after he turned in a narrative based on a Norman Rockwell painting in class this week. Congratulations Dae'shaun!

Make sure you make a note of which semester you will attend art club: Fall Art Club begins in September and Spring Art Club begins in January. Veteran eighth-grade art club members who requested year-round may find their names on the list for Year-Round Art Club. It is important that members attend only their particular track meetings and only when they are tracked in.
The first art club meeting for Fall T1-3 is scheduled for September 5, 2019, and Fall T2-4 members meet on September 12. Please bring your $10 art club membership fee when you attend your first meeting. See the art club page for details regarding LRMS Art Club. If you have any questions, just email me at [email protected].
Art Club applications for 2019-20 were accepted from July 5 until August 15. Everyone who is interested was required to apply, even former club members, so that I know your intent.
If you are a new student to me, attaching a sample artwork and including a detailed description of your skills and activities make the difference in your being considered. Once I select the best candidates from each grade and track, I can accommodate approximately 135 members for the upcoming year. Depending on interest, and based on our track populations, the breakdown might look like this for a Fall Art Club, and a Spring Art Club respectively: 19 T1, 14 T2, 14 T3 and 19 T4 members (Grade 6 = 11, Grade 7=11 and Grade 8 =11 to total 33 members per each combined-track group). If the number of best candidates exceeds our meximum club population, I will accept candidates who are not in my art electives first. Next, grade 8 candidates will be given priority, Teacher recommendations, and then a lottery, will be considered if there are still more candidates than available spaces.
In order to maintain consistency from year-to-year, 8th-graders who were in art club last year are eligible to request year-round membership.

Resident Writer Michael Beadle Teams up with Artists
Wake County United Arts Council and Lufkin's PTA sponsor and fund visiting resident writer Michael Beadle as he partners with Ms. Barlow to present a lesson on "Propaganda: The Art of Persuasion" to art elective classes. Students are fortunate to learn from a professional writer persuasive writing techniques -- in fact, he terms them propaganda techniques, such as "Us Versus Them, Celebrity Endorsement, and Word Magic" -- a variety of writing strategies to convince audiences to buy a product, or to join a cause. Art students gathered in collaborative groups, not unlike the popular "Shark Tank" episodes, where they must come up with a pitch and a campaign that integrates literacy and art. A slogan and logo, poster or brochure, t-shirts or bumper stickers are all different types of visual supports that help "seal the deal" in their final presentations.
